SIWO-KUL® - Power stays flexible.
From traction motors to transformers, SIWO-KUL® supports equipment exposed to heat, cold and high electrical stresses. Each version combines a flexible conductor with silicone insulation and protection tailored to its specific application.
A flexible tinned copper conductor
Silicone designed to withstand thermal stresses
A cable design tailored to the application
A train starts up in freezing temperatures. Shortly afterwards, its traction motor heats up. The cable connecting it must withstand this temperature change while remaining flexible enough to fit into the vehicle’s confined space.
This story begins in Breitenbach. In 1974, Schweizerische Isola-Werke filed a Swiss patent application, published in 1977 under number CH 586454 A5. Werner Andres, Ernst Diehl and Werner Marti, named as inventors in the German publication of the same invention, developed a flexible cable combining mica with a silicone resin that remains flexible after curing. The patent describes the requirements of traction motors and the need to remain operational at −30°C.
Over the decades, this research continued. Nexans patents EP 2 711 938 B1 and EP 2 711 934 B1 focus on multilayer silicone insulation, its semiconductive layers and their co-extrusion. From the flexibility of the original cable to precise control of electrical interfaces, these innovations reflect a shared ambition: to continuously improve the reliability of the most demanding electrical connections.
The technology, layer by layer
Each element of the cable construction addresses a specific connection requirement. Their combination depends on the selected version.
| Element | |
| 01. A conductor designed for reliable connections | At the heart of the cable, a flexible tinned copper conductor facilitates installation and connection. The tin coating protects the copper surface against oxidation, an advantage for connections exposed to demanding operating conditions. |
| 02. Silicone insulation: flexibility and thermal resistance | Surrounding the conductor, silicone insulation combines flexibility with resistance to high temperatures. It enables connections close to machinery, where heat and limited installation space present particular challenges. |
| 03. Semiconductive layers for electric field control | In the relevant cable designs, silicone-based semiconductive layers surround the conductor. The co-extrusion technology described in Nexans patents aims to achieve uniform interfaces and reduce partial discharges while preserving cable flexibility. |
Protection tailored to the environment
The outer protection varies depending on the application. Compare the differences between cable constructions before selecting a product reference.
