The Zurich western bypass is currently the largest civil engineering project in the canton of Zurich. It includes 5 tunnels (Eggrain with the Ristet entry and exit tunnels / Hafnerberg / Escher / Uetliberg 4.4 km / Islisberg 4.95 km) and the Zurich-West (Filderen) and Zurich-South (Brunau) interchanges. A total of 27.8 km of tunnels is planned, most of which is already under construction.
The sections and tunnels of the Zurich western bypass will be equipped with the latest electromechanical and safety systems, in particular energy supply, lighting, ventilation, measurement and monitoring, as well as signalling and communications systems.
In order to assure the correct function of all these systems and electromechanical equipment, many kilometres of cable will be laid in pipe blocks, conduits and shafts, and 13 exchanges for electromechanical equipment will be installed. Installation is already complete in the Eggrain, Ristet and Hafnerberg tunnels, which account for about 15% of the overall tunnel length.
A challenge for Nexans
We have supplied a significant proportion of the almost 3500 cables and lines with a total length of 290 km for the first stage. Three new types of cable have been developed by our engineering department especially for this project:
- Security telephone cable NT (ST) FE180-E30 for voice and data, in which the function and electrical transmission characteristics are maintained in the event of fire.
- Three types of flame-retarding basic hybrid cables for VBA, which combine telecommunications and power transmission.
- Security cable SKN FE 180 for lighting the carriageway, with maintained insulating properties in the event of fire.
These customized cables demonstrate once more the considerable contribution to the safety of motorway users made by Nexans services and products.
